Water Treatment Plant Operation Career Prep is designed to train students to safely and effectively operate and maintain drinking water treatment plants.  This course covers information on the importance and responsibilities of a water treatment plant operator, sources of water, reservoir management, and intake structures.  This course also trains students in the practical aspects of operating and maintaining water treatment plants, emphasizing safe practices and procedures.

About ProTrain:

ProTrain is committed to offering world class interactive online courses that provide training and learning support for the student in a number of ways during their experience. The ProTrain course structure has been developed to provide activities to guide students throughout the entire process of learning. Learning activities include hands-on assignments that allow students to use what they are learning to allow better transferable skills within their work environments; and collaborative assignments, like wikis and discussion groups that allow them to share what they have learned with others in the same course.

While a student learns, they are not alone. Each student will receive guidance and support from his or her assigned Training Assessment Manager (TAM) and Student Services Specialist (SSS) representative. In addition, we will offer live monthly webinars and feedback sessions for various subject categories. Throughout the entire course, students are monitored by the SSS representative using progress reporting from the ProTrain Registration System (PRS).

ProTrain will provide Students who successfully complete their online certification programs and pass their industry level certification exams the access to the new ProTrain Education-2-Employment Career Tracker system. The Career Tracker will allow our students who pass exams to load their own resumes at no additional cost, and letting industry employers find their talent through the same database.

Curriculum Developer Biography:

Sigrid Ferguson Green, MSEd in Instructional Design for Online Learning, MS Human Resource Management, with over 15 years of experience in training and development/education. Her experience has been to lead teams of Instructional Designers, and managed curricula for companies such as: American Express and Assurant. Her experience includes but is not limited to the following: technical writing, web design, training, instructional design, graphic design, and curriculum development.

Course Outline:

Lesson 1: The Design and Construction Processes

In this lesson you are provided with an overview of the design and construction process as an introduction to planning.

Lesson 2: General Water Supply Design Considerations

In this lesson you will review design capacity and the function of water demand.

Lesson 3: Coagulation and Flocculation

In this lesson you will learn the object of coagulation (and subsequently flocculation) is to turn the small particles into larger particles called flocs, either as precipitates or suspended particles.

Lesson 4: Lime-Soda Softening

In this lesson you will define the term hardness and learn that the failure to lather well and the formation of scum on bath tubs is the result of the reactions of calcium and magnesium with the soap.  

Lesson 5: Ion Exchange

In this lesson ion exchange is defined as a reversible reaction in which a charged ion in solution is exchanged for a similarly charged ion electrostatically attached to an immobile solid particle.

Lesson 6: Reverse Osmosis and Nanofiltration

In this lesson you will become familiar with reverse osmosis (RO), nanofiltration (NF), and electrodialysis (membrane processes). 

Lesson 7: Sedimentation

In this lesson you will learn about sedimentation. Once the particles and precipitate are formed, the most common means of removing hardness from the water is by gravitational 
settling in a sedimentation basin (also called a clarifier or settling tank ).

Lesson 8: Granular Filtration

In this lesson you will become familiar with the most common filtration process, granular filtration.  In this process the suspended or colloidal impurities are separated from water by passage through a porous medium. The medium is usually a bed of sand or other media such as coal, activated carbon, or garnet.

Lesson 9: Membrane Filtration

In this lesson you will learn how to remove a constituent from the water by pumping against the surface of a membrane, resulting in a separation of product and waste streams.

Lesson 10: Disinfection and Fluoridation

In this lesson you will learn the purpose of disinfection and fluoridation.

Lesson 11: Water Plant Residuals Management

In this lesson you will learn satisfactory treatment and disposal of water treatment plant residuals can be the single most complex and costly operation in the plant.
